The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.
Each year on various dates The Post offers poppies (known as Buddy Poppies) to the public. All poppies offered by the American Legion are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals.
The American Legion Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs.
In addition, any profits from local sales go right back to supporting veterans in the local area. We are truly gratefully for your support for this program and how so many are willing to contribute to this tradition.
The American Legion co hosts Memorial Day activities for veterans and the public in the St Charles/Fox Valley area.
Each year the American Legion offers scholarships to relatives of American Legion members. Check with the post for more details.
The American Legion, along with the VFW provides a color guard for organizations, parades and other events in the area.
Each year, the American Legion treats veterans, relatives, and support staff from Hines V.A. Hospital and convalescent and nursing homes in the area to a 2 hour Paddle boat ride on the Fox River. Supporting the American Legion are volunteers from the Ladies Auxiliary. Veterans are treated to the river cruise, dinner, and a raffle. The outing provided the opportunity for these veterans to get out of their daily environment, enjoy the commaraderie, tranquility, and fresh evening air on the Fox River. The American Legion Post 342 has sponsored this event for over the past 30 years.
Fellowship is available every Wednesday and Saturday morning from 8-10 at the veteran center.
