Who we are:

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit  veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and  military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces.
We  trace our roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War  (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local  organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many  arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans'  pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.

Our Mission

To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas  conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military and our communities. To  advocate on behalf of all veterans.

Our Vision

Ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.

Programs

College and Veteran Financial Assistance

Each year the St Charles VFW Post 5036 awards scholarships to members and their children to assist with the cost of higher education or job training expenses. We awarded 9 scholarships for the 2018/19 school year. Application deadlines are May 31st each year. Contact the post to learn more and request an application.

The VFW also provides financial assistance to student veterans at Elgin Community College. Contact the veterans affairs counselor at ECC for more information

Buddy Poppy

Each year on various dates The Post offers poppies (known as Buddy Poppies) to the public. All poppies offered by the VFW are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals.

The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home For Children.

In addition, any profits from local sales go right back to supporting veterans in the local area. We are truly gratefully for your support for this program and how so many are willing to contribute to this tradition.

Student Involvement

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation.

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Awards are given st the Post level and winners move on to compete st the district, state, and national level.

The VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest is offered to all 6-8th grade students.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme. Again winners st the Post level move on to compete at the next level.

Contact the post for more details.

Scouting

The Post financially supports local scouting organizations and provides certificates of commendation to all who achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. We also offer a Scout of the Year program.
